PORTRAIT AND LANDSCAPE PAINTING WORKSHOP
Instructor: Greg Cartmell
Weds, Thurs and Friday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
July 16, 17 & 18, 2014 (THREE DAY WEEKEND WORKSHOP)
OR can be taken as a (ONE DAY WORSKHOP)
This workshop is designed to take the student to the next level with their painting skills. The success or failure of most paintings happen with the initial decisions; students will be shown how to set themselves up for a successful painting, be it a portrait a landscape or a figure.
Day one of the three-day workshop starts off with a demonstration of painting a portrait from a live model. This method will train students to be able to capture a likeness and paint a portrait sketch in under 30 minutes. This is a very insightful way of capturing likenesses: light, color, flesh tones and composition. In the afternoon the students will apply the techniques of the portrait sketch from a live model. *you are welcome to bring your OWN model for this afternoon session, i.e. a family member or friend. Otherwise a model will be supplied for the class.
Day two will be a landscape workshop in which students will be shown a very direct approach to the impressionistic landscape. The day will begin with a demonstration of how to capture the light on any particular landscape “a la prima”– the direct method - as well as the use of “broken color” which lends itself to a very impressionistic outcome. Students will then tune their pallets to prepare for the afternoon attack on a canvas. Students will be shown how to complete a landscape painting in anywhere from ten minutes to two hours.
Day three will start with another demonstration of painting a landscape or a figure depending upon the needs of the students, and we will also cover the completion of a painting and how to polish the work to bring it to a high degree of finish. A fun critique will end the day!
Students will go home with a minimum of two completed paintings
