Description: In this first time offered class, students will create a personal and one-of-a-kind memory vessel after the tradition of early American and French folk art. Instructor will offer a digital presentation of mixed media mosaic memory vessels, pique assiette objects and wonderful "outsider" environments embellished with broken china, pottery and brick-a-brack.

Pique Assiette is the age-old technique of creating mosaic and assemblage out of shards of broken pottery, crockery and dishes. Literally translated from French as "stolen plates", pique assiette is a process of making mosaics that allows students to include found and collected objects from their personal lives and from the environment as well as traditional mosaic materials such as tile, glass and stone.

*Students are encouraged to bring plates, mugs, heirlooms, dishes and other bric-a-brac to include in a personalized piece of art. A great selection of materials will be also provided.

Day one will include instruction of safely and effectively processing materials with contemporary mosaic tools, design considerations, weather considerations for interior or exterior display of projects and guided mosaic setting.

Day two will include a demonstration of grouting textured, three dimensional items like vessels and pots. Students will group their Memory Vessel and take it home with them.

Students should bring their own vessel to cover such as a pot, vase, pottery jog/ urn or similar. Instructor suggests looking at thrift stores for such items. Class will cover how to correctly prepare surfaces to receive mosaic. Materials and substrates will be provided by individual students with guidance from instructor.
