WEARABLE MEMORIES/ FOUND OBJECT JEWELRY
Instructor: Becky Burt
Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
July 20 - 21, 2013 (2-DAY WORKSHOP)
During this two day found objects collage class, students will start with a commercial tin (think an Altoids tin or similar container) and apply items with personal meaning to create a one-of-a-kind, wearable, memento.
Students can use anything that will make their work personal: magazine pages, photos, shells, sticks, buttons, pottery shards, thimbles, feathers, costume jewelry, stones, lace, old coffee cans -- the possibilities and combinations are endless. The resulting work will be absolutely personal and incredibly artistic!
Students are asked to bring at least 10-15 items they think could be used for their project. For example, a jar of old buttons is a great start! We will start the first day with a swap table where all students will be asked to contribute 5 items. These items will then become a “common stash” students can draw from for their own work.
The instructor will provide each student with a basic kit containing a tin, a pinback, wire and tubing, and will bring general metals tools such as hammers and saws, etc. The instructor will demonstrate construction techniques as well as lead design discussions. Additional items, such as copper and brass sheet, will be available for purchase from the instructor. Toolkits will be available to rent from instructor for $10/weekend.
Level: Any level, but basic sawing and fabrications skills are a plus.
