Description: With an element of history and context, this course will cover a variety of non-adhesive book structures from all over the world, including sculptural one-page structures and pamphlet bindings, Japanese stab-bindings, the palm-leaf book from southeast Asia, the slotted-tape binding from Italy, and the Ethiopian or Coptic binding. Since these structures don't require glue, they can be easily produced at home. Everyone will leave the course with at least five finished books. As we move through the different structures, we will discuss practical and artistic applications; for those interested in artist's books, there will be space to experiment with non-traditional materials and content.
