Description: Designed for those who have little formal background in visual art, the course will offer insight to those who would like to better understand the art that they see, whether the viewer sees the work in a book, museum, or gallery. This is a clean hands, discussion based seminar in which we will consider some of the most significant works in the history of art and come to understand what it is that makes them important. Included in the content will be more traditional works such as Michelangelo's David as well as works of more debatable merit such as the splattered paintings of Jackson Pollock. Students will also learn to see the work through the creative process by examining how the medium is applied rather than focusing on the narrative aspects of the work.
